Context

The original label on the catalogue card gives the provenance as the Skeena River, and the Gaitikshean Tribe which very probably a phonetic spelling of Gitksan. The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; The catalogue card states, The adze is one of those used by the Gaitikshean Indians until the introduction of iron. Collected in 1888
'Accessions Register reads: Dug up by an Indian belonging to the Gaitik-shean Tribe at the forth of the Skeena River, B. Columbia. and Given on the spot to J Turner Turner 1888. The adze is one of those used by the Gaitikshean Indians till the introduction of iron. S-J Harknett 4/10/2004'
