Description

The basket is woven from natural coloured fibres in an open weave design. The rim is circular, but the basket sides slant inwards as the weaving ends in square corners and the base is made from two pieces of wood slotted together to form an 'X'. Bamboo branches run from the base to the rim on both the inside and outside of the basket. The outside branches are nailed to the inside branches.
There are two loops on the outside of two of the branches at about the middle of the basket.

History Of Use

Basket making is a three hundred year old tradition in this village. Of 700 inhabitants 300 are part-time basket makers and 30 are full-time. The high-quality baskets are exported or sold in and out of the area for trade or personal use.
