Description

Made of thin strands of natural-coloured rattan, and is approximately one half finished. The unfinished portion consists of loose individual strands that extend about 18 cm higher than the upper limit of the plaiting. Most strands curve away from the basket, but some are wrapped around the inside. The upper limit of the plaiting is not uniform on all sides. The basket has no frame, and is light and flexible. The bottom is square but the shape becomes round as the plaiting progresses upwards. A single looped strand of rattan is attached to the centre of the bottom on the outside. The strand was threaded through two woven strands and then its ends were tied together.

History Of Use

Basket making in this village is a tradition extending back at least 300 years. Of the 700 residents, 300 are part-time basket makers and about 30 make baskets full-time. They make high-quality baskets used for export, or for sale in and out of the area (collector's notes).
