Description

Hollow finial of an abstract, monster-like form. Figure has a long curved snout, pointed ears and fangs and is decorated with a headpiece resembling a standing peacock. Near the open end, a small bar runs through the centre and out either side.

History Of Use

May have been used in a small temple or household; possibly part of a religious object.

Iconographic Meaning

Figure is a makara, or sea monster; the vehicle of Ganga who is the goddess embodied in the Ganges River.
