History Of Use

Ostrich eggshell beads would be individually wrapped in this plant fibre. The fibre is from a large, aromatic bulb.

Cultural Context

Used as part of shell bead manufacture.

Specific Techniques

After wrapping, the beads are strung and the necklace is rubbed with a mixture of red ochre and gemsbok fat. A piece of limestone is used to smooth beads to a glassy finish.
