Description

Figure of human seated, under a canopy, on the back of an elephant on wheels. Figure and canopy form lid, hinged to the elephant. Figure wearing headdress, holding a lotus in each hand, arms out to the side of the body. Elephant is decorated on back, head, ears, tail, trunk with two bands around each ankle. Free-moving wheels are spoked. Traces of red residue on canopy top, figure head and headdress, and on elephant head and ears.

Used in a small temple or household to hold ceremonial valuables.

Iconographic Meaning

Figure is possibly Indrani, the Sakti, or manifestation of active powers, of the god Indra, or else the goddess Lakshmi.
