Fragment: Crown Item Number: Sf787 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

U-shaped piece of sheet metal with three parallel prongs. Eleven evenly-spaced staples arranged in rows. Gilded surface.

History Of Use

Appear to be fragments from the upper edge of a crown similar to a square crown in this collection (Sf559). Square crowns would have had a wicker form inside to fit the head (p.c. Sr. W. Alva, Bruning Museum). The mechanical attachment of bangles by staples is a typical feature of Vicus metalwork.

Narrative

Vicus style, Early Intermediate Period, 300 B.C.E.-200 C.E.

Iconographic Meaning

The three pronged projection is probably a stylized feather.
