Fragment: Crown Item Number: Sf788 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Crown fragment; flat gilded sheet metal with two small round discs attached with metal staples and cut out rows of fluted, triangular and circular shapes. Numerous staple fragments. Some gilded surface visible.

History Of Use

Appear to be fragments from the upper edge of a crown similar to a square crown in this collection (Sf559). Square crowns would have had a wicker form inside to fit the head (p.c. Sr. W. Alva, Bruning Museum). The mechanical attachment of bangles by staples is typical of Vicus metalwork.

Iconographic Meaning

The three prong projection is probably a stylized feather.
