Fragment: Crown Item Number: Sf790 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Small sheet metal crown fragment with staple fragment attached.

History Of Use

Appear to be fragments from the upper edge of a crown similar to a square crown in this collection (Sf559). Square crowns would have had a wicker form inside to fit the head (p.c. Sr. W. Alva, Bruning Museum). The mechanical attachment of bangles by staples is typical of Vicus metalwork.

Narrative

Vicus style, Early Intermediate Period; 300 B.C.E.-200 C.E.

Iconographic Meaning

The three prong projection is probably a stylized feather.
