Description

A fragmentary slit tapestry border in two reds and yellow with attached fringe. The main band has interlocking red and yellow serpent bodies with serrated edges and black outlining. Narrow bands with interlocking hooks in red and light red are sewn to both sides and a separately woven red fringe is attached to one outer edge. More coarsely woven than most. Very thick warps of fringe are replied z after z-spin and 2 ply s.

History Of Use

The colours and arrangement of bands and fringe are standard for the central coast (Tsunoyama, fig. 40) and so are the yarn spin details Rowe).

Iconographic Meaning

The interlocking hooks are probably derived from serpent motifs.
