Knife Item Number: Sf501 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

A semi-circular blade surmounted by a short shaft and a wider base. The bottom half of the sharp, curved edge is serrated. One side of the blade is slightly convex with two indents, and the other side is relatively flat and smooth.

Narrative

Inca style ? Late Horizon 1476-1532 C.E. The form of the shaft and base suggests the blade was hafted to a stalk. An Incan knife has a figure on the handle who holds a hafted axe with this type of head (Kauffmann Doig). Axeheads have a long distribution history as there are Vicus examples from 200 C.E. as well (Lumbreras).
