Bell Item Number: Sf542 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

A spherical metal bell with a narrow slit in the bottom and a pellet inside. One half of the bell has the raised features of a human face: eyes, nose, mouth. The shank is broken.

History Of Use

Appears to be an individual bell of a larger jangler or tree-like arrangement of cast metal figures and pendant bells (Antze; Schmidt). These ornaments were fixed to upper ends of staffs and probably were used as a sign of authority or carried in dances as musical accompaniment.
