Knife Item Number: Sf503 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

A crescent-shaped blade with an elaborate shaft and t-shaped handle. The shaft has a low relief, frontal human figure (Janus) with upraised arms, set between the outer struts. The figure wears a fringed tunic and a casque-like hat, as well as ear and nose ornaments. Digits, shirt fringe and hat are incised.

Narrative

Early Chimu? Middle Horizon, 600-900 C.E. The form of the blade suggests it was hafted to a stalk to make an axe-like weapon. The figure has facial modelling and ornament that are reminiscent of the Moche Style while the flaring tunic is Chimu in appearance.
