Beads Item Number: Sf657 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

48 beads, alternating spherical and ellipsoid shaped, and five are large, globular beads which are very bright gold. 20 globular beads are smaller and duller. The beads range in diameter from 0.8 - 1.3 cm. and some are extensively tarnished.

History Of Use

These beads may be from a variety of necklaces and adornments that were used in both life and funereal contexts. There are several sizes and alloys present. The globular, bright gold beads may have an earlier date (200 C.E.). The duller, globular beads are likely Chimu (750-1476 C.E.). Alan Sawyer suggested the ellipsoid beads may be Post-Conquest (after 1532 C.E.) although the style of bead is found in many periods and locales.
