Narrative

Inscription, date (spring of 1521) and signature of the artist T'ang Yin (1470-1523) are found on the right. Colophon, date (third month of 1521) and signature of a contemporary of the artist, Chu K'ai, are found at the left. An unidentified comment on the mount is dated in the Tao-kuang Era (1821-1850) of the Qing Dynasty. The painting is allegedly done by a very well-known, popular, and often copied artist of the Ming Dynasty, T'ang Yin. However, the artist was known as both a master of his own private interests and as one who supplied paintings for the market. Consequently judgement of his original works is difficult. In general, a painting ascribed to him should be assumed to be uncertain, as it is in this case.
