Moccasin Item Number: Na701 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Cured, natural-coloured, slipper-type hide moccasin with shallow boot legging. Remnants of floral design glass-bead embroidery; orange flower, green leaves, blue and brown bud, black stems. Zig-zag cut hide trim at cuff attachment; three holes on each front edge of cuff. Double sole attached with running stitch.

Specific Techniques

The fabrication of hide clothing was done by cutting prepared hide, punching minute holes with a bone awl, then feeding sinew through the holes. Eyed needles were unknown until introduced by traders.
