Description

Painting depicting several small black and brown birds amongst bamboo, a rock outcropping, and other plants on blue-grey moss or grass, all on a beige background with brocade backing. Rolled around a cylinder with ceramic finials glazed in brown, white, green, and yellow with an incised cloud design. There is no signature, but there are many red seals at the corners of the painting and on the mounting, as well as a very large seal at the top centre of the painting.

Narrative

An inscription at the top in gold gives the title and assigns it to Huang Ch'uan, a famous bird painter of the Five Dynasties period (906-960). The subject and style are traditionally associated with Huang Ch'uan, however the painting is more likely 18th-19th century.
