Description

Elongated, bell-shaped, embossed yellow metal plume with a thin pointed protrusion, above which is a rounded section with tear-drop eyes and a thin nose. Two rows of dots across top curve and single row of dots around outside edge, and in three bands across. Long, curly tailed creature in profile: three across the plaque and two sideways at the bottom.

History Of Use

Sheet metal ornaments with gold surfaces were used to decorate clothing and headdresses as well as furnishings. Probably a metal plume for a headdress, similar to ones in Emmerich.

Iconographic Meaning

The ornament is in the shape of a feather. The base of the feather has a face with Lambayeque style of eye in teardrop shape. A monkey-like animal is repeated over the rest of the plume.
