Band Item Number: Sf813 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

A long, double-faced band of red, green, blue and white yarns. White eight-pointed stars on blue backgrounds alternate with red stars on a green background. The same designs and colour combinations alternate on the underside in reversed positions. An outlined circle surrounded by four smaller outlined circles are in the centre of each star. One white llama on a blue background fills the final square of the belt. Four strand, round braids are attached to both ends.

History Of Use

The 8 pointed star is an outstanding design element of the far south coast Yuaca Style. John Rowe suggests there is some degree of 'standardization' in provincial styles like Yuaca as there is in the Highland Inca Style (1979). Standardized tunic designs of the Highland Inca Style appear to correspond to rank or occupation and it is possible that the 8 pointed star is also an insignia. This band may be a belt or a headband.
