Ornament Item Number: Sf557 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

A thin sheet metal disc with two closely spaced holes near the edge with clear imprints of threads on both sides from the holes to the edge of the disc. Other textile pseudomorphs on both sides. There is an area on one side where the corroded surface has chipped away, exposing fragments of a gilded layer.

History Of Use

Gilded discs are numerous in the Vicus cache from Loma Negra (Schaffer). The two holes and the thread imprints suggest this disc was suspended. A Vicus effigy ceramic (Disselhoff) shows a figure with a round pectoral suspended from its neck. The fragment of cloth on both sides of the disc suggests it lay between layers of the cloth.
