Description

Shaped as a woman; holes for bowl and stem identify it as a pipe. She is seated with knees drawn up, hands bound behind her back, and long hair fastened to her hands, pulling her head back. Ribs, trachea, and collarbone are clearly delineated. An otter is carved on her stomach.

History Of Use

Theme of a woman being tortured was common among the Tlingit. She might have been possessed by an otter and become insane. A confession would return her to normalcy.
