History Of Use

Woodblock depicting an arrangement of the Four Heavenly Kings (chaturmahārāja/風調雨順), holding each a Stūpa, umbrella, sword, pipa (stringed instrument); with the Buddha/Buddhist deity/Bodhisattva in the middle expressing the Mudrā of protection and fearlessness (abhayamudrā). The proportions of this block and the Buddhist iconography suggest that it was used for printing an illustration for a Tibetan or Mongolian Buddhist text.
