Description

Collapsible fan with 18 inner ribs made of ivory and two ivory ribs on the outside. The outermost ribs are carved with a floral design. One side is covered in white silk, which has been stiffened and has a light bown paper edge. The silk is painted with a design of cranes flying over a marsh, in grey, white, red, yellow and blue/green. The ends of the ribs are fastened with a u-shaped brass loop to which is knotted a knotted grey silk cord ending in a tassel.

History Of Use

Summer fans, either round or folding, can be carried throughout the summer by men or women. The folding fan is seen more often at the theatre or on the street as it can be tucked into a kimono or obi more easily.
