Description

Round shallow bowl of white bodied porcelain on single ring foot; red 4 character mark under base 'Kutani Taniguchi'. Sides somewhat rounded, expanding to rim, which is outturned, pinched upward in 4 places. Bowl is white, with blue and black rings around foot and leaf design in grey and black on underside. Upper surface has 2 overlapping rectangular panels painted over-glaze in brocade designs, one red and gold, the other light blue with white. Clustered at one side of bowl and scattered to other side are blue and white flowers with yellow centres; brown leaves with gold veins. Large chip under rim.

History Of Use

Ceramics were first produced at Kutani, near the north-western coast of Japan, in the 17th century. The kilns were revived in the 19th century and have continued to produce since that time.
