Description

Folding paper fan with tan bamboo ribs. Both sides of the fan are covered with white paper and has a painted circular design on the front and back. A white plastic pin holds the ribs together at one end.

History Of Use

Used in the ceremony held when completing the roof of a Japanese home. Three fans are tied to form a circle, and with a strand of hemp and streamers of folded white paper, they are bound to a cypress pole. In centre is placed a mask of ofafuku, a good luck symbol. In former times this was a lengthy ceremony in which many gifts were presented. Today the fans themselves are rarely seen and the ceremony has been dispensed with.

Iconographic Meaning
