Description

Cylindrical, carved wooden stool with two tiers, each with four repeated spider motifs set in square grooved frames. Smooth seat with tree rings visible; ring base; hollow. Dark stained except for light brown seat, legs, interior and bottom. Tiers are separated by open rectangular areas in both horizontal and vertical planes.

History Of Use

Carved stools were used only by men of high rank (northern). Persons of some social importance were allowed large stools with geometric or limited symbolism to indicate owners position in the social hierarchy. Stool categories reflect the panoply of feudal society (Gebauer).
