Description
Human face mask divided horizontally through the eyes. The two parts are joined with string through holes drilled in the ears. The brown face has circular cut out hole eyes surrounded by a black area that extends down the sides into a red feathery feature. The nostrils, mouth and ears are red. Above the open, upward pointed mouth, there is a curling black moustache. Red feathery hair above. Surface is smooth. Lightly painted in red and black. Series of holes around the upper perimeter are plugged with small pieces of wood.
Narrative
This Northwest Coast mask shows certain attributes that relate to Tsimshian, Heiltsuk and Nuxalk mask styles. The front has both Tsimshian and Heiltsuk characteristics, while the roughly adzed inside suggests a Nuxalk carver.
