Description

Seal carved from one piece of brown soapstone with a blank seal surface. The box-shaped base is surmounted by a carved "temple dog."

History Of Use

Seals appear on both paintings and calligraphy. They may be affixed by the artists, his friends, or by collectors. Sometimes they record a name, sometimes they record a name, sometimes a commendatory phrase. They are generally square. 'temple dog' seals are often made in pairs.

Iconographic Meaning

Represented is a mythical lion type of animal resembling Pekinese dogs, called 'Dogs of Fo'. Often found guarding the gates of Buddhist temples, or on either side of a statue.
