Basket Item Number: Ee2 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Small twill woven basket with a wedge-shaped bottom, reinforced; of light brown natural colour. It has a long narrow strap attached with 2 small handles.

History Of Use

This was the type of basket used in the process of spinning for holding the raw cotton; an activity performed only by the women. The long strap was worn around the neck to facilitate being able to move about while spinning. The cane used for making the baskets was cut with a dao and woven by men. The woven baskets and cloth provide the 2 main items of material culture for this region.
