Sling Item Number: Ee64 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

A long length of alternately woven brown and beige wool consisting mainly of a rope that is round in cross-section. A wider pouch-like section has been woven in approximately half-way through its length. One end of the rope has a loop woven in while the other is frayed and appears to have had a loop ripped off.

History Of Use

This slingshot is used by livestock herders in Ladakh to move their flocks along and especially to round-up strays. A small stone is inserted in the pouch and the 2 ends are grasped while swinging in a circle to achieve momentum. By releasing 1 end at the correct moment, the stone is propelled forward. This is a device commonly used throughout Asia.
