Description

Drop spindle consisting of a brown stained wooden shaft tapered at one end, with clay whorl placed 5.5 cm from lower end. Holds spun white cotton with raw cotton ball attached.

History Of Use

Cotton spinning is now rare. The spinner holds the cotton in one hand and with the other hand operates the spindle which rests in a clay dish, gourd, or shell. Pre-Conquest and colonial spindles were elaborately carved.
