Textile Item Number: Sa296 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Rectangular textile of woven cotton; striped fabric sample with pinked edges. Stripes vary in width. Repeating stripe sets on red ground; thin blue on either side of blue and white; thin yellow on either side of green; thin yellow on either side of blue. White adhesive tag reads '9'.

History Of Use

This sample is from a plain weave textile, woven on a commercial treadle loom. Men operate these looms in co-operative or factory enterprises. These textiles are produced mainly for skirts, shawls, and shirts. Although textile patterns were formerly distinguishable between towns, adaptation of patterns from town to town, makes establishing the origin of a modern commercial textile virtually impossible (Anderson).
