Description

Jacket made of coarse black wool with blue zigzag embroidery on the shoulders, cuffs and edges. The jacket also has a multicoloured floral design emerging from the side seams on the back. The back bottom edge has a silk fringe in maroon interspersed with yellow, red and green.

History Of Use

This jacket is worn as part of a costume representing wealth and power. The material was woven from natural black wool on a floor loom by men of the municipality; costume tailored and embroidered by hand by others skilled in this trade.

Iconographic Meaning

Blue zigzag on shoulders and cuffs shows wearer traditionally as Aj Kij, an astronomer or astrologist (Pettersen).
