Description

Trousers, knee-length, made from coarse black wool with flaps attached to the side seams and back facing. The flaps are embroidered with a multicoloured silk floral design. The cuffs are slit at the knee with one corner folded over and sewn in place.

History Of Use

Embroidered design of chain and Cretan hand stitch shows wearer is head of the family or of some importance. Material was woven from black wool on a floor loom by the men of the town; the costume was tailored and embroidered by hand by others skilled in this trade.

Iconographic Meaning

Flaps on sides has embroidered design of many-rayed sun which represents 'grandfather sun' (wood & osborne).
