Woman's huipil worn for everyday. Striped purple and white pattern and embroidery design is distinctive in Santiago Atitlan.

Specific Techniques

Fabric hand-woven on a back strap loom by a woman; and hand embroidered at neck.
The huipil is made from one 35 cm wide 4 selvedge length that has been cut in half laterally and joined together along lengthwise selvedge edges. Probably backstrap loomed warp-faced plain ground fabric. Warp: 2 singles; weft: 2 singles. Woven with edge-to-edge rows of single-faced supplemental weft patterning over approximately 2 to 8 warps. Supplemental weft: three 2-plied threads (each s-plied). Crudely hand-stitched at front and back center seams and at side seams. Front facing lower edge features selvedge edge; back facing lower edge has a crudely hand-stitched hem over cut ends. Machine sewn collar from purchased cotton fabric. Embroidered area around the collar done primarily in satin stitch.
