Description

Woman's skirt woven from red cotton with vertical and horizontal dark blue ikat stripes at intervals of ten and thirteen cm. Thicker bands of ikat feature a repeated 'doll' figure flanked by bands of repeated blocks in white on blue.

History Of Use

Skirt worn by women for daily wear, tubular form which is wrapped around the hips and secured by a sash or belt. Skirt pattern is typical of Santiago Atitlan.

Specific Techniques

Hand woven on a floor loom by a man; ikat yarn, known as jaspe, used for design.
