History Of Use

Labrets were a form of facial adornment worn by men or women, depending on the region. The ornaments were worn in holes pierced through the lower lip or through the cheeks on either side of the mouth. Labrets were inserted at puberty and as the person grew older, the size of the labret was increased. They were usually made of wood or ivory. Labret styles vary by region.
