Description

Rectangular skirt of plain weave cotton with raw ends. Purple ground with bands of designs in white, black, yellow, orange, green and blue running the width of one half of the piece and with fourteen small blue diamonds widely spaced on the other half. Design motif includes: star-like shapes; band of peacocks?; yaks with loads; horses with loads.

History Of Use

This skirt is worn in a wrap-around fashion as an article of daily dress. The skirt pieces are woven on a loin loom by Monpa women for themselves and their families. Secondary uses include as a married women's head cloth, and they may also be worn by men for ceremonial dancing.

Narrative

From the area previously known as the North-East Frontier Agency. In 1965 the North-East Frontier Agency was divided into five districts: Kameng district; Subansiri district; Siang district; Lohit district; Tirap district. Arunachal Pradesh is now divided into 17 districts, including East Kameng and West Kameng.
