Description
Hank of raw wool. The wool is natural in colour, soft and unspun. There are some dark areas within the wool and some extraneous matter in small quantities.
History Of Use
An example of raw wool before spinning. It has been soaked in rice and water for 3 days, mixed with chalk, and removed of extraneous matter. Since Ladakhi families are self-sufficient in the production of woolen goods for their own use, both men and women are occupied in spinning whenever they have an opportunity. It is a common sight to see people spinning as they walk down the path or sit conversing with friends. Pashmina is the best-known wool produced in the area. It is named for the goat from which it comes; it is also known internationally as lena, a high quality, fine wool. Both goats and sheep are shorn of their wool in Ladakh. This is an example of goat's wool.
