Description

Skirt formed by two pieces of indigo-dyed cotton with two white stripes woven into the fabric every so often. The two pieces are joined together with a hand-embroidered multicoloured band (randas) insertion stitch seam in silk (?) and cotton or synthetic yarn. The ends are sewn together to form a tube.

History Of Use

Tubular skirts are wrapped around the hips and worn with a belt or sash. The skirt material is commercially woven on a treadle loom. The randas (seam bands) are hand embroidered, and are often distinguishable as to village.
