Description
A flat open-work brass piece with a punched design. The base of the piece is curved. From the base to the top, the sides curve inward, tapering to cloud shapes, and one central hole at the top. Central design consists of four Chinese script characters, flanked by four dragons, two on either side. The translation from the top down is red, heart, loyalty, and virtue.
Narrative
Probably an ornamental fitting for an alter to the personal deity of a fraternal organization, suggested by the characters red and loyalty. Fraternal organizations provided order, security, and promoted business relationships and interests in mining communities and cities. Found within Chinese communities both in China and overseas. Collected in Chilliwack, B.C.
