Description

Carved, wooden mask depicting Dzunuk’wa. The humanoid face with pursed red lips, high cheekbones, raised eyebrows and deeply set eyes, with a series of parallel horizontal lines incised next to them. There are two metal eyehooks attached to the back rim of the mask with a metal wire tied to them.

History Of Use

Dzunuk’wa was a female giantess who inhabited the distant forest and mountains. She had a distinctive cry 'hu, hu' and was particularly threatening to children. She could also be benevolent in some aspects. Used as a crest she was associated with wealth.

A black mask with pursed lips indicates the mask represents Dzunuk'wa.
