Description

Ceramic bowl foot fragment with orange-red and brown-black designs on cream slip with tan paste. Hollow human head-shape with modelled nose, vertical slot on back with modelled nose, vertical slot on back, and two slots under 'chin'. Bottom back phalange 'foot'. Top is slightly concave and broken around perimeter. Clay ball inside outlines in brown-black, and for eyes.. Orange-red infill.

History Of Use

Pre-Columbian Costa Rica was part of the transitional zone between the traditions of Meso America and South America. Influences from both areas are evident with the most powerful and extensive coming from the north, particularly for the Pacific area. This fragment is most likely from a 3-footed bowl.
