Description

Ceramic animal head. Orange paste with remnants of cream slip and black-brown lines with red infill design. Snout with two impressed nostrils, and raised eyes outlined in black-brown. Crest along top to knob at back. Cavity at bottom back.

History Of Use

Pre-Columbian Costa Rica was part of the transitional zone between the traditions of Meso America and South America. Influences from both areas are evident with the most powerful and extensive coming from the north, particularly for the Pacific area. This fragment may be a tapir or pig-like head, possibly from a rattle or bowl foot.
