Description

Ceramic animal head fragment. Orange paste with modelled and impressed detail. Rounded with raised eyes (?) on either side. Snout between and to one side of 'eyes' with two impressed eyes and line. Hole and crest between eyes. To other side, off centre is a knob with two incised lines. Under snout is two raised x-shapes, a raised knob between, and a small round hole to right and remnant of one to left. Cavity at bottom.

History Of Use

Pre-Columbian Costa Rica was part of the transitional zone between the traditions of Meso America and South America. Influences from both areas are evident with the most powerful and extensive coming from the north, particularly for the Pacific area. Fragment from a bowl or vessel projection, reminiscent of a pig's head.
