Description

Wide sheet of thin, tan-coloured material made from bark. One side paler than the other. Many repairs made with sinew thread; also some patches. Edges unfinished (no fraying). Grain appears to be diagonal to the edges; often the grain direction is crossed perpendicularly.

History Of Use

A traditional cloth derived from the inner bark of a central African tree. This material has been used extensively throughout the region, for garments, containers, and other products.

Specific Techniques

Apparently from the inner bark of a species of brachysteria.
