Description

Light brown burlap(?) covering over a rectangular block shape bundle of blackened substance and stitched up one side with cotton(?) cord. Bundle squeezed between two sticks and all three wrapped and knotted together with fibre lashing. Sticks taper at ends with each finished in a knob and both touching while they are wrapped and knotted with cotton(?) cord held on the ends by the knobs.

History Of Use

For carrying bundles lashed to supports. Bearer holds ends of shafts at back of neck and shoulders. Sometimes shafts would protrude from either side of bundles.

The collector, Nellie Taylor, served as a nursing missionary (1900-1920), first with the Ovimbundu at Bihe, then with the Chokwe at luma Kasai. She belonged to a group who sponsored several missions across Central Africa from 1881-1931.
