Description

Coiled basket (a) has circular base with straight sides that taper at mouth. The base has small ivory disc with holes through which the baleen is laced. There are numerous spots where the thin baleen has broken off, the largest sections are found in the centre of the base. Raised circular lid (b) with an inner lip is topped by an ivory disc with a square knob.

History Of Use

Coiling method with ivory ornamentation is common Inuit basketry type. However, baleen, from the mouths of whales, was not a common material in basket making.
