Description

Heavy container (part a) of orange-yellow wood carved in slender rounded, bulbous shape with two small protruding handles to which braided leather handle straps are tied. Lid (part b) is made of cowhide moulded to the shape of the container and tight fitting.

History Of Use

Turkana water and or milk container. Made by women. Rounded bottoms are more stable in sand. Transport vessels are distinguished by projections and straps which can be hung over the shoulder or lashed to animals. Usually long necked containers are milk containers. Women make for men to use on journeys. Lids act as cups. Some made to look like calabashes.
