Description
Basketry plaque with geometric design on face, spreading from centre to edge. Coiled with a thick grass foundation. Coiled loop attached for hanging.
History Of Use
Hopi plaques were used for carrying the 'hoddentin' or sacred meal. This meal was used for propitiation of evil forces in nature. Women made the plaques with designs derived from dreams, or from powers of worship, elements of fear, etc. Plaques were an item of exchange, used for ceremonial purposes, now similar plaques are made for the tourist trade. The loop on this piece suggests it was made for tourists to hang on their walls.
